Facing the North Korea threat/One-woman show on Hedy Lamarr

What to look for on Smart Talk Friday, June 7, 2017:

North Korea has conducted twelve – maybe more – missile tests since the beginning of the year.  On July 4^th, North Korea launched what is believed to be their first intercontinental ballistic missile – an ICBM.  U.S. military analysts believe that North Korea can now threaten Alaska with a nuclear weapon.

The Trump Administration is putting pressure on China and South Korea to temper Kim Jong Un, the third-generation despotic ruler of North Korea.  Days before Tuesday’s test launch, Trump praised Chinese President Xi Jinping’s efforts to reign in the hermit nation on Twitter, saying “North Korea has shown great disrespect for their neighbor, China, by shooting off yet another ballistic missile…but China is trying hard!”

Support for China’s efforts eroded following the launch, with Trump tweeting “Trade between China and North Korea grew almost 40% in the first quarter. So much for China working with us – but we had to give it a try!”  Despite the sabre rattling, experts contend the only path to a viable solution is diplomacy.

Council on Foreign Relations President Richard Haas spoke with CNBC on Wednesday, saying “The only approach in between, or alternative, is some kind of a diplomatic approach. Increase the sanctions against Chinese entities, and try to get some kind of a freeze with North Korea. It’s not going to solve the problem, but may put a ceiling on it.”

There are many suggestions about how to deal with North Korea – there is consensus that a military solution is not realistic.  On Friday’s edition of WITF’s Smart Talk, we’ll discuss the crisis on the Korean Peninsula, the threat that Kim Jong Un poses to the U.S. and the rest of the world and possible solutions to bringing an end to the nuclear tension with Col. David Detata, an instructor at the U.S. Army War College in Carlisle.

Also, Hedy Lamarr was once considered “the most beautiful woman in the world.” Many may not know that the Hollywood star was also a brilliant innovator. Her role in technological advancements during WWII helped pave the way for today’s wireless communications.

Heather Massie, an actor with mid-state ties, wrote and stars in HEDY! The Life & Inventions of Hedy Lamarr, a one-woman show that premieres at the Gamut ClassicTheatre in Harrisburg this weekend.

The show tells the story of Viennese born actor, her groundbreaking contributions to science and technology, and the hurdles she had to overcome as a female inventor in the mid-20^th century. 2017 seems to be the year for rediscovery of Hedy’s life and accomplishments, as the documentary Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story by Alexandra Dean premiered this past spring. Heather Massie joins us on Smart Talk to discuss the show.

– The U.S. been dealing with this this nation sine Jan 23, 1968 when North Korea captured the U.S.S Pueblo and held the ship and it’s  83-man crew for 11-months.

In my opinion, very seriously  the U.S., should have nuked North Korea then and challenged both the Soviet Union and China with World War III. I think they would have backed down.

The Pueblo incident and the TET offensive drain my faith in the U.S. to unconditionally defeat an adversary. 

I served during the Vietnam era. Unfortunately, my service was reluctant, viewing my  country fighting military-industrial conflict with no national will to unconditionally crush an enemy/

At age 71- I think  we should crush North Korea into total and unconditional surrender with casualties north of the 38th parallel somewhere around 30 million.
