Six-year-old killed on I-83 lost control of mini dirt bike with training wheels

(Undated) — June Treichler was watching her great-grandson Bryce Treichler ride his dirt bike in the back yard like he’d done many times since he got it as a Christmas gift.
When he disappeared from view over the hill, she knew something bad happened.
The 6-year-old lost control of the bike, a 50cc Yamaha mini dirt bike with training wheels, and rode it off an embankment next to the yard, Treichler said.
The yard sits 40 feet from the edge of Interstate 83, Lynn Treichler, Bryce’s grandmother, said Wednesday. Treichler, 49, grew up at the house, and rule No. 1 was that you didn’t go near the highway. It was a rule they taught all the children.
“It’s going to be hard,” she said. “He was loved by everyone he met.”
Police said Bryce rode down a hill, over an embankment and then onto the interstate, directly into the path of a northbound Chevrolet Silverado pickup driven by a 72-year-old man from Grantville. Bryce died at the scene from blunt force trauma.
Bryce was going into second grade at Hillside Elementary School, said his father, James. He described his son as an energetic boy who loved animals. “We’ll have to deal with this every day of our life.”
The crash happened near Exit 38, Reesers Summmit, in Fairview Township.
Lynn Treichler has organized a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for funeral expenses.
Sarah Heckard, Bryce’s cousin, said she’s planning a yard sale to raise money to put up a fence.
West Shore School District offers help
The West Shore School District issued a statement Wednesday afternoon about the tragic death of Bryce Treichler. He had just completed first grade at Hillside Elementary School, according to the letter posted on Twitter.
The letter tells families that counseling services are available if children need it.
It also asks parents to keep Bryce’s family in their thoughts.
