Record number to hit the road this holiday weekend

(Harrisburg) — AAA is predicting a record number of travelers across the commonwealth over the Independence Day holiday weekend.

AAA expects 1.5 million Pennsylvanians to drive 50 miles or more between Friday and the 4th of July, a three-percent increase over last year’s holiday.

Spokeswoman Jana Tidwell says the record travel numbers can likely be attributed to low gas prices.

“We’re going to probably see Christmas in July for many people throughout Pennsylvania and throughout the country in terms of gas prices.” Tidwell says. “Gas prices will likely dip down to where they were on Christmas Day, which is unheard of during the peak summer travel season.”

Tidwell suggests hitting the road early in the morning or later at night to avoid traffic jams.

If possible, travel on the holiday itself.
