Libre’s law strengthens animal cruelty laws in PA; Second day of Gettysburg

Last year, a four-month-old Boston Terrier was found abandoned and near death at a Lancaster County breeding facility. The pup was rescued and named “Libre.”  Libre’s recovery garnered international attention via social media.  His poor condition got so much attention that it initiated an upsurge in awareness surrounding animal cruelty laws in Pennsylvania.  Pennsylvania is one of last three states to pass a law with felony statutes for animal abuse. As of now, even the most severe cases of animal abuse fall into the same category of other minor crimes such as loitering and speeding.

This past Tuesday the Senate voted unanimously to pass “Libre’s Law,” taking a step towards increasing penalties for animal cruelty, and classifying the levels of neglect and abuse in Pennsylvania. It would allow the state to crack down on animal cruelty and crimes, also making it easier to identify offenders who may be more likely to commit crimes against humans.

Governor Tom Wolf has pledged to sign the legislation, marking the most significant advancement in animal abuse laws in over three decades.
