(Harrisburg) — A state lawmaker says there’s a tax break available that many people may not be aware of.

With the tax filing deadline approaching, Senator Vincent Hughes is advising Pennsylvanians to see if they’re eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit.

It benefits low to moderate income individuals who must meet certain requirements, including file a tax return even if they do not owe any tax.

Hughes says eligibility is not restricted to the most recent tax filing year.

“It is retroactive.  You may find that you could have been eligible  for this program in 2015, 2014 and 2013,” he said.

As of 2015, Senator Hughes say close to 200 thousand eligible Pennsylvanians missed out on the credit worth a total of 430 million dollars.

You can find out more about the credit at IRS.gov.
