(Harrisburg) — According to the state Health Department, prostate cancer is the second leading cause of death in men in Pennsylvania, and a new report recommends ways to reduce that.

The report comes from the Pennsylvania Prostate Cancer Task Force which was created by an act of the Legislature in 2015.

Deputy Health Secretary Dr. Loren Robinson says the report  includes a list of recommendations on improving the health of men, especially those at highest risk.

“Education and awareness is important to reach the hard to reach or high-risk men.  We need to get high-risk men, especially black males, into the health care system so that they can have a conversation with their health care provider about prostate health and other health conditions, ” she said.

Dr. Robinson approaches the issue from a personal perspective. Her father, also a doctor, was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1999.

The report is available through the Health Department’s website, health.pa.gov.
