(Harrisburg) — Governor Tom Wolf is endorsing new guidelines designed to cut down on the chances of becoming addicted to opioids.

Wolf says the new pain management guidelines in sports medicine and orthopedics is one way to fully come to terms with the opioid epidemic.

“It’s an epidemic that is killing people all across the state.  Rich and poor, rural, urban, male and female.  It’s the reason that republicans and democrats have joined together in Harrisburg to try to find a way to address this,” he said.

The Governor was joined by legendary Pittsburgh Steeler Franco Harris, who recounted his own struggles with pain after a 12 year NFL career.

“Having pain every day is not good.  But we know that there comes a point to where opioids,.. that chain has to be broken,” Harris said.

The new guidelines seek to create a balance between successful pain management and preventing a patient from becoming overly dependent on the powerful medications.
