(Harrisburg) —

UPDATE: Interstate 83 has been reopened.

An earlier story is below:

Interstate 83 northbound between the York Split and Second Street Exit 43 is closed due to an multi-vehicle accident. Traffic is being detourted and PennDOT does not expect it to reopen until early Wednesday afternoon.

The accident occurred just before the Second Street exit around 8am. It involves two trucks and five or six other vehicles, according to PennDOT district 8 spokesman Greg Penny.

“They’ve been working on removing the damaged vehicles. There were no fatalties, but some people probably were taken to the hospital,” he says. “You can’t move on 83 northbound, that’s blocked. The southbound lane is open.”

Northbound traffic on I-83 approaching the York Split with Route 581 is now being directed westbound on Route 581. Motorists headed to Harrisburg have the option to take northbound Route 11/15 (the Camp Hill Bypass) past the Camp Hill Mall and cross the river on the Harvey Taylor Bridge.

Motorists can also opt to take Market Street through Camp Hill and cross the Market Street bridge.
