AMBER Alert works
(Harrisburg) — The Pennsylvania State Police took time this week to recognize a system that alerts the public when a child is missing.
The AMBER Alert system marks its 21st year nationally in 2017. Pennsylvania’s version was established in 2002.
State Police spokesman, Corporal Adam Reed, says the system has played a role in safely returning a total of 96 abducted children in Pennsylvania.
“The number one thing we can tell citizens when you see an AMBER Alert on TV, or on your phone, or over the radio, is to take it seriously. These AMBER Alert requests are highly vetted and we at the Pennsylvania State Police do not put the information out as an alert unless it’s verified and for real,” he said.
There are a number of steps a parent or guardian can take to prevent a child from being abducted.
