York: Have lead service pipes? Get water tested

(York) — Property owners who have lead service lines should contact the York Water Company to have their water tested for lead, which is harmful to unborn children and children under the age of 7, according to a news release from the City of York.

The water company sent letters to property owners who have lead service lines to their properties to call about having their water tested.

State-mandated testing last fall showed that six of 50 lead pipes owned by the water company were leeching unacceptable amounts of lead into the drinking water. The company has been working to inform the public and replace the old plumbing.

The city’s Bureau of Health is working with the water company on addressing the issue, the news release states. Exposure to lead can cause brain damage, behavioral problems, learning disabilities and neurological problems.

Residents who live in rental properties can contact the York Water Company to see if their place is affected, the news release states.
