PA wants a big role in development of self-driving vehicles

(Harrisburg) — Pennsylvania’s Department of Transportation is offering up three testing sites to further the development of autonomous vehicle technology in the commonwealth.
In its pursuit to become a recognized leader in the field, Pennsylvania recently applied to the U.S. Department of Transportation to be designated as an Automated Vehicle Proving Ground Pilot.
PennDOT Spokeswoman Erin Waters-Trasatt says having the designation will help spread information more quickly so everyone can benefit from it.
“If these locations are chosen as proving ground locations by the U. S. Department of Transportation, they would join what’s called a ‘community of practice,’ where all of these sites are sharing information, they’re collaborating, they’re sharing best practices [and] data, and all the information related to this development,” she said.
The three testing sites proposed are the City of Pittsburgh, Penn State University, and the Pocono Raceway.
