(Lebanon) — A pedestrian was struck by a train on the railroad tracks near Scull and North Gannon streets Monday afternoon.

The call came across EMA at 4:37 p.m. as a crash with injuries involving a pedestrian struck, but scanner chatter indicated that the train struck a person.

A bystander who didn’t witness the incident said she thought she heard that the victim was a child, but a news release issued by police proved otherwise.

“Police found a 51-year-old male had been struck by a Norfolk Southern train which had been traveling east on the northern set of rails,” the news release said. “The male died from his injuries.”

Witnesses told police they saw the man stopped at the southern set of rails, and that he attempted to run across the tracks, but tripped on a southern rail and fell into the path of the oncoming train, the news release said.

He attempted to cross just west of the North Eighth Street crossing where there is no marked or lighted area for crossing, according to the news release. No one was observed with, or in the area of, the man when he attempted to cross the tracks.

The victim’s name is not being released at this time pending notification of his family, the news release said.
