Deer-related crashes increase this time of year

(Harrisburg) — There were more than 36-hundred deer-related car crashes in Pennsylvania last year.

Pennsylvania drivers are already among the most likely in the country to have a deer-involved crash and the probability ticks up in November as the animals mate…and dusk arrives earlier each night.

The good news is that under Pennsylvania law, drivers cannot be considered at fault for a collision with a deer and insurers cannot add a surcharge to premiums for the accident.

Insurance Department Spokesman Ron Ruman says there is one slight catch, you actually have to hit the deer for this law to apply.

“So that is one important thing to note, that if you would swerve, miss a deer and hit a tree that would not be considered a deer crash,” he said.

State Farm Insurance says the average cost of a deer involved collision is just under $4,000.
