Midstate county office getting audit from state

(Sunbury) — A Northumberland County government office faces a state audit – after its leader was charged with stealing more than $12,000 from a separate, private scholarship fund.

State Auditor General Eugene DePasquale says two auditors will be on-site in the Northumberland County prothonotary’s office for as long as needed.

County commissioners asked for the audit after Prothonotary Justin Dunkelberger was charged in February with the alleged theft.

DePasquale says the audit is unique.

“Well it is relatively rare that we get called in after the allegations of the felony and arrest of something that is related to outside of the workplace, but the commissioners were concerned enough that they thought it might impact actual taxpayer money.”

DePasquale says the state auditors are remaining neutral, despite the criminal charge against Dunkelberger.

“Going into this, those allegations were not related to public acts. So we’re going to go in and find out if public acts were impacted as well,” adds DePasquale.

Dunkelberger has said he’s eager to show he’s followed all rules as prothonotary.

He’s still in the position while his criminal case winds its way through the system.
