PA liquor stores see increase in revenue

(Harrisburg) — There have been many attempts to privatize liquor sales in Pennsylvania, but officials with the Liquor Control Board tried to remind lawmakers of the value of state stores at a budget hearing this past week.
The Liquor Control Board was able to contribute 100 million dollars to the general fund in the 2014-15 fiscal year…an increase from about 80 million in prior years.
Executive Director John Metzger says he believes there is an opportunity to raise more revenue by pricing more sensibly.
“There is a bourbon called Pappy Van Winkle that we’re selling. Extraordinary demand when Buffalo Trace gives us their annual allocation. We’re selling it for approximately 20 percent of the aftermarket price in the United States because of our formula,” he said.
Board members estimate pricing changes could raise 40 million dollars more per year, and Sunday sales could raise 15 million.
