Baby, it’s cold outside!

(Harrisburg) — The midstate is bracing for the coldest weather of the season this weekend.

Wind chills over the next few days could fall as low as 20 below.

The National Weather Service in State College says the frigid temperatures will remain in the region through President’s Day on Monday.

The midstate could see an inch of snow by tomorrow morning.

So, the state’s fire commissioner has some tips on how to stay safe, while staying warm.

With the wind chill, temperatures across the state could dip below zero through President’s Day.

When it gets that cold, some people may turn to supplemental heating sources like stoves or generators.

But state Fire Commissioner Tim Solobay  says using gasoline or charcoal powered heating devices inside the home is too much of a risk.

“It’s a whole lot easier to put an extra sweater on or in some cases, maybe wear a jacket if you have to, if it’s a little bit chillier in the house because of the extreme cold temperatures,” he says, “as opposed to taking a chance of using something that you normally would not use to heat your home.”

He says using those puts your home and family at greater risk of fire as well as carbon monoxide poisoning.

“If you’d have been very, very healthy and haven’t had any issues and these things kind of come on you while you’re using these types of supplemental heating devices, you may want to consider that could be the possbile cause, he says, “especially if you don’t happen to have a cabron monoxide detector in your home.”

Solobay says people should seek help immediately if they notice symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning.

He notes working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in the home are critical for keeping families safe.
