(Harrisburg) — The Pennsylvania State Police have released their illegal drug seizure statistics for 2015.

The state police report taking $118 million dollars worth of illegal drugs off the streets in 2015, about 11 million dollars more than the previous year. Included in that total was over 170 pounds of heroin.

Trooper Adam Reed with the state police says heroin is a relatively new challenge for them since it was previously concentrated in cities.

“I think that is pretty telling as to how widespread our heroin problem is in Pennsylvania.  As the Pennsylvania State Police, we are the primary police agency in a lot of very rural areas, so to be seeing this much heroin is pretty alarming,” Reed said.

Reed says $8.7 million dollars worth of heroin was seized just in the last three months of 2015 and that’s when the street value was low.
