(Hummelstown) — Just days after a jury found a midstate police officer not guilty for shooting and killing a 59-year-old after he ran from a traffic stop, a petition is calling for her dismissal.

The group Hummelstown for Accountability started the petition and has collected more than 2,500 signatures.

It calls for the Hummelstown Police Department to remove Officer Lisa Mearkle from duty.

A petition organizer says Mearkle should be held to a higher standard because she is sworn to protect the public.

She was suspended when criminal charges were filed against her in the wake of her February shooting of David Kassick.

But, after the not guilty verdict last week, she said she was hoping to return to the police department.
