(Londonderry Township) — Nearly one-third of Three Mile Island’s fuel is being replaced.

The outage, which is underway today, will also allow inspectors and maintenance workers to perform critical tasks.

Three Mile Island has an additional 1,600 workers at the plant in Dauphin County during the outage on the activities, on top of the usual 700 full-time employees.

The maintenance and inspections are part of the usual two-year plan for checks to make sure the reactor is in prime condition.

TMI did not say when it expects the reactor to resume operation.
