WellSpan alerts open-heart surgery patients to infection risk
(York) — About 1,300 open-heart surgery patients at a midstate hospital may have been exposed to a potential infection.
WellSpan York Hospital says bacteria was present between October 1st, 2011 and July 24th of this year.
It can cause infections in patients, though it is typically not harmful.
WellSpan York says it’s established a website – WellSpan.org/yorkopenheart – and alerted patients through letters.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and U.S. Food and Drug Administration recently issued alerts for heater-cooler devices used during open-heart surgery.
The bacteria is linked to the equipment, which was replaced in late-July.
