(Conoy Township) — Preliminary work on a controversial soybean crushing facility in Lancaster County is starting, ahead of a decision from the state.

Perdue AgriBusiness says it’s started site grading for the facility, which is still under review by the state Department of Environmental Protection.

Perdue says it moved forward after talking with Lancaster County, Conoy Township, and the county’s solid waste management authority.

Agriculture and business groups support the proposal, arguing it will prop up the area’s economy.

But environmentalists point to annual pollution from the facility, including 208 tons of hexane, which is classified as hazardous.
