(Harrisburg) — PennDOT today announced that starting Tuesday, April 28, ramp closures will be implemented at the Interstate 83, Route 581 Interchange for overnight asphalt paving on the ramps to I-83 South. These ramps will be closed and detoured between 9 PM and 6 AM the following morning.

The ramp from Route 581 East to I-83 South at Exit 6-B, and the ramp from Route 581 East to Lemoyne at Exit 6-C will be closed for three nights, April 28-30. Traffic from Route 581 East to I-83 South will be directed to use I-83 North to 13th Street at Exit 44-A, make a right turn onto 13th Street, then a left turn onto the ramp to I-83 South. Route 581 East traffic to Lemoyne will be directed along the same detour route to I-83 South, then use the Lemoyne Exit off of I-83 South at Exit 41-B.

The Lowther Street ramp to I-83 South will be closed for two nights starting Wednesday, April 29. Traffic from Lowther Street to I-83 South will be directed to continue east on Lowther Street to I-83 North, to 13th Street at Exit 44-A, make a right turn onto 13th Street, then a left turn onto I-83 South.

This nighttime ramp paving operation is weather sensitive, and may be postponed if adverse weather conditions are forecasted.

This work is part of the $22.1 million contract that was awarded on July 12, 2013 to J.D. Eckman Inc., of Atglen, Chester County, which will make several safety and congestion mitigation improvements to the I-83, Route 581 interchange and adjacent ramps.

This project is scheduled for completion in the summer of 2015.
