Powdered alcohol gets federal agency approval, but don’t expect it in Pa.

(Harrisburg) — The state Liquor Control Board has moved to ban a new powered alcohol product that isn’t even on the market yet.

Pennsylvania joins neighboring states like Virginia and Delaware in imposing a ban on the product, which was approved today by a federal agency.

Stacy Kriedeman with the Liquor Control Board says palcohol could be concealed and abused easily.

“I just think throughout our history, the PLCB has made consumer safety one of our top priorities, and there have been other products that we have not listed because of concerns about potential abuse,” says Kriedeman.

A 2006 peer reviewed study estimated excessive alcohol consumption cost Pennsyvlania nearly $8.4 billion in health care, lost productivity, and property damage from DUI crashes.

The company that makes palcohol, one of the powdered alcohol mixes, says it’s a safe product that’s no different than any other liquor.
