(York) — Nighttime operations will resume on Monday, February 23, for the repair and resurfacing project on Interstate 83 in southern York County that began last August.

The project extends 3.6 miles between the Maryland state line and Exit 4 (Shrewsbury). Construction crews last year focused on northbound I-83.

There is still some minor work to complete in the northbound direction – such as the installation of signs and replacement of guiderail – but the main focus this year will be on southbound I-83.

An average of nearly 39,175 vehicles travel on this portion of I-83 every day.

Motorists are advised they may encounter single-lane traffic restrictions in one or both directions through this portion of I-83 in southern York County. In the southbound direction, the single-lane traffic restrictions may take place between 7 PM and 5 AM, Sunday through Thursday nights.

Motorists may also encounter northbound lane restrictions over the next weeks until the northbound work is completed, but the timeframe starts and end two hours later — between 9 PM and 7 AM.

The contractor has the option to work Friday or Saturday nights if work is delayed by weather or other circumstances during the week.

Travelers are asked to be alert for this operation, to obey work zone signs, and to slow down when approaching and traveling through work zones, not only for their safety, but also for the safety of the road crews. To avoid delays, motorists should allow for additional time in their travel plans or seek an alternate route.

PennDOT has contracted with Blooming Glen Contractors, Inc. of Blooming Glen, Pennsylvania, to conduct the highway improvement project at a cost of $6,172,483.

The project includes roadway base repair, bridge deck and pavement joint repairs, repairs to the median barrier and to the ramps at the Exit 4 interchange, milling (i.e., removal of the top layer of the old asphalt surface), and resurfacing with four inches of new asphalt. The overall project is scheduled to be completed by the end of July.
