Some Game Commission officers can soon use body cameras

(Harrisburg) — Some Pennsylvania Game Commission officers will soon be able to wear body cameras, after Governor Corbett recently signed an amendment into law.

Republican state Representative Dan Moul of Adams County says the legislation, which he sponsored, was inspired by the fatal shooting of wildlife conservation officer David Grove by a poacher in 2010.

The bill will apply to waterway conservation officers only, but Moul says it will make a difference.

“Realizing that he’s not only recording the person, the incident, he’s recording himself, it brings out more professionalism on his part,” he says.

Some officers used body cameras in 2012, but had to stop just a few months later when the Legislature narrowed the authorization to law enforcement officers.

Privacy advocates have questioned how footage is used, and how long it’s stored.

The law takes effect at the end of the year.
