First gubernatorial debate one month from today in Hershey

(Hershey) — One month from today, Governor Corbett and Democratic nominee Tom Wolf will take the stage in Hershey for their first debate of the general election, andpreparations are already underway for the event.

This isn’t the first time gubernatorial candidates will appear together at the Pennsylvania Chamber of Business and Industry’s annual dinner, but Gene Barr, President of the group, says this is especially exciting because it’s the first debate on the schedule.

Discussion topics will include the state’s tax structure, fiscal policy, and regulatory oversight.

Barr says even though the Chamber’s political action committee endorsed the Corbett campaign, that won’t impact the debate.

“We attempt certainly to make it as non-partisan as possible. We try to make it fair. We want each candidate to have their ability to speak on the issues.”

The debate is scheduled to start at 7:30 the night of September 22nd, at Hershey Lodge in Hershey.

“Maybe in future years it will be. Maybe everybody will say, ‘We’re not gonna do yours, we gotta do the Chamber dinner first’. Ours has been part of the debate schedule for a number of years, it just happens to be the kickoff this year,” says Barr.

Between 1,500 and 1,800 people are expected to attend, including state legislators, congressional representatives, and business leaders from across the state.

Two other debates are scheduled for the Philadelphia and Pittsburgh media markets.
