A new traffic jam app, this time from PennDOT

(Harrisburg) — Drivers trying to get more information on traffic conditions have another option, and this time its from PennDOT.

The free 511PA app will be available for both Apple and Android users, and covers 40,000 miles of state roads, plus a portion in West Virginia and New Jersey.

“Certainly, a big part of our day is traveling into work. And our app lets you plan ahead before you leave. But it also lets you set parameters for information you want to receive while you’re on the go,” says spokeswoman Erin Waters-Trasatt.

The app is designed to be hands and eyes free: it will announce traffic jams and other travel notifications like construction.

“So of course we encourage you to not interact with and not call the 511 service or look at the app or any of the other services while you’re driving. We really want to think safety first. Even though we’re putting this information in your hand, it does all the work for you.”

Waters-Trasatt says it’s designed to keep drivers from getting distracted.

The app may be particularly handy as the state ramps up construction efforts after the transportation funding bill passed late last year.
