Storm expected to bring rain, and little, if any, snow
(State College) — Unless the weather forecast shifts dramatically, most of the region will avoid much, if any snowfall, with tonight’s storm. Instead,the main concern is with ice.
The storm is going to move fast as temperatures plummet, according to the National Weather Service.
“I think the most important thing about this storm is its very fast moving, it’ll be a brief period of showers and maybe even an isolated thunderstorm down in the lower Susquehanna Valley. It’ll be sharply colder, and when the temperatures drop sharply after it rains, it could create icy roads and sidewalks in spots, so that’s something to be aware of,” says Richard Grumm,in the scientific operations office at the NWS office in State College.
“The worst problem could be it’s going to rain, it’s going to wipe all the anti-skid and salt on the road. As temperatures fall, any water on the roads could flash freeze overnight tonight so it could be icy in spots,” saysGrumm. He adds temperatures could go from the low 40s at sundown to near 20 later tonight.
Grumm says a wind advisory will be in effect until noon tomorrow for 11 midstate counties and until 11 am in Berks County.
He says areas around State College might get an inch of snow, but heavy snowfall is only expected in portions of northwestern Pennsylvania.
Grumm says the next two weeks look calm, but notes the model at theNWS can’t predict sudden disturbances leading to storms.
