Smart Talk: Amish and shunning; Amateur weather forecasters getting it right
What to look for on Smart Talk Tuesday, February 4, 2014:
The Amish are known for their simple lifestyles that include not using most modern technologies such as electricity. They travel from one place to the next in buggies that are pulled by horses, unless they hire a non-Amish person to drive them a longer distance. Even though tourists visit places where the Amish live like Lancaster County, the Amish stay to themselves and avoid contact with the outside world.
After five Amish schoolgirls were shot and killed in Lancaster County in 2006, the world was stunned by how the Amish community offered forgiveness to the killer and the comfort they provided to his family.
Even though many Central Pennsylvanians have Amish friends or come into contact with them often, we still don’t know much about the Amish.
The practice of shunning is an example and one that will be explored in an American Experience documentary film The Amish: Shunned Tuesday night at 9 on witf-TV and PBS.
