Summer amusement riders urged to use caution and common sense
(Harrisburg) — Thrill-seekers boarding the commonwealth’s more than 9,000 registered amusement rides this summer are being asked to use caution and common sense to stay safe.
The state Agriculture Department has 2,200 ride inspectors who look at the equipment, with many of them stationed inside amusement parks.
Spokeswoman Samantha Elliott Krepps says simple reminders can often help keep riders safe.
“Obey the ride operator’s instructions, keep your arms, hands and feet inside the ride at all times and don’t get off the ride until the ride comes to a complete stop,” Krepps says. “Another one that we feel is very important is stop riding the ride before you get too tired. Tired riders are often more likely to get hurt.”
Last year, the Bureau of Ride and Measurement Standards reported 293 injuries on state rides.
Krepps says most of them were the result of riders not following safety guidelines.
An estimated 11 million people visited the commonwealth’s amusement parks last year.
