New state law crafted to combat meth production
(Harrisburg) — Pennsylvania will soon become the 25th state to join a nationwide database that tracks real-time purchases of over-the-counter ephedrine and pseudo-ephedrine medicines.
State Representative Marguerite Quinn was the prime sponsor of the new law. The Bucks County Republican says it will enhance regulations that already limit the sale of these products by mass.
“This is going to be a real plus for law enforcement, and keep these products doing just what they should be — taking care of someone with a stuffy nose, etc. — not being cooked for methamphetamine drugs.”
Quinn says real-time tracking helps to prevent criminals from making purchases at multiple stores to obtain large amounts of certain cold medicines. The nationwide database is also designed to nab those who would try to cross state lines to evade the law.
