Enforcement effort targets I-80 from New Jersey to California
(Harrisburg) — Interstate 80 is the focus of increased traffic law enforcement from coast-to-coast this week.
Pennsylvania State Police are increasing their visibility and stepping up traffic law enforcement efforts across all 314 miles of I-80 that bisect the commonwealth. In central Pennsylvania, the roadway runs through portions of Columbia, Northumberland and Union counties.
PSP spokesman Adam Reed says the so-called “I-80 Challenge” will run through Wednesday July 31st.
“This is a very busy vacation time, so there is a large increase in traffic along Interstate 80 as families travel back and forth to their vacation destinations,” Reed says. “The end goal is to make their journeys as safe as possible by ensuring that everyone is in compliance with the traffic laws.”
Eleven states, from New Jersey to California, are participating in the enforcement effort.
In 2011, Reed says Pennsylvania recorded 16 fatal crashes along I-80 — a decrease from 24 the previous year. He hopes this effort can continue to improve the safety of the roadway.
