Susquehanna Art Museum to break ground on new home

(Harrisburg) — A midstate art museum that’s been expanding for nearly 25 years is marking a major milestone.
Leaders are expected to break ground for construction of the Susquehanna Art Museum‘s new home in Harrisburg at 4:30 this afternoon.
Executive Director Laurene Buckley says the 20,000 sq. ft. facility will host events and displays representing a wide range of interests.
“We plan to have activities, workshops, lectures, theater groups, music going on continually, so it’s not just visual art, but ‘the arts’ that we’re talking about,” Buckley says.
Buckley says the museum will be built adjacent to the old Keystone Trust Building at Third and Calder streets in Harrisburg’s Midtown neighborhood.
The former bank building will be refurbished and serve as an entryway to the new building, which is on track to be completed next year.
Backers are working to raise $12 million for the project and to set up an endowment.
