Midstate gay rights supporters rally as Supreme Court hears landmark cases

(Harrisburg) — Members of the midstate lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community as well as their straight allies are banding together today in support of equality.

Several gay rights advocacy groups, including the Harrisburg, Lebanon, Lancaster, York chapter of Marriage Equality for Pennsylvania, are holding a vigil this afternoon at the U.S. courthouse on Third and Walnut streets in Harrisburg.

The organization’s Katie Somers says she’s proud to gather just as the U.S. Supreme Court is set to take up California’s gay marriage ban, known as Prop 8, and the Defense of Marriage Act.

She says she doesn’t think a move to legalize gay marriage is that far away. “I’d like to see it in my lifetime, and I do think that we will get there. I think it’s going to be easier as more and more people come out, and more and more supporters. We’re at an all-time high right now with the American society in favor of same-sex couples.”

Today’s vigil includes guest speakers, a moment of silence, and musical performances.
