Deadline for high-risk insurance pools is today

(Harrisburg) — The federal government is cutting off enrollment for states’ high-risk insurance pools, which include people who have pre-existing conditions.

Today is the deadline to submit applications for the commonwealth’s version of that program, known as “PA Fair Care.”

State Insurance Commissioner Michael Consedine says the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services will not process applications received after midnight.

“We have just put out, in the last week, a reminder that folks that believe they are eligible have until March 2 to enroll in the program,” Consedine says. “We would encourage them to do that because after that, it does go away in terms of new enrollees.”

Consedine says coverage for the 6,700 Pennsylvanians currently enrolled in the high-risk pool should not be affected.

The state Insurance Department is asking federal regulators to reconsider the cutoff.
