100th Anniversary of the Lincoln Highway

In 1912, Carl Fisher held a meeting to propose a “coast to coast rock highway”. Fisher was the man responsible for the Indianapolis Speedway and also for developing swamplands in Florida into what is now Miami Beach. The Lincoln Highway was originally to be a brand new road but due to funding difficulties became a patchwork of existing roads.

The road today is full of history as it passes through and around towns that boomed because of the traffic it brought through, and this year, one hundred years after it was conceived, various tour groups are driving parts or all of the highway in celebration.

The Lincoln Highway Association is holding its own tour which consists of two groups, one starting in Times Square where the road starts and another group in San Francisco where it ends, both traveling the highway and meeting up in Kearney, Nebraska which is considered the midpoint. http://www.lincolnhighwayassoc.org/tour/2013/

In Latrobe, PA there is the Lincoln Highway Experience which features an orientation film, various interpretive exhibits on the architecture along the route and other exhibits which help travelers learn more and enhance their travel experience.
