The Justice Department says the investigation into the Capitol insurrection will likely be one of the largest in American history.
The troops were expected to leave the city March 12, a Capitol Police statement said, but are needed in light of current intelligence. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and U.S. Army officials would have to approve.
The congressional official also says most of his staff have not yet been vaccinated, despite their continuing work at the Capitol campus to repair damage from the insurrection.
Videos from the day of the attack appear to show some officers escorting rioters inside the building.
Rep. Bennie Thompson filed a civil lawsuit that accuses former President Donald Trump, Rudy Giuliani as well as the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers of conspiring to incite the violence at the Capitol.
Yogananda Pittman, who took the helm of the force following the Jan. 6 attack, said in a statement that “vast improvements” were needed for the physical security of the Capitol area.
The Department of Justice said it would spare no resource to bring to justice those responsible for the deadly insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.
