Neither the city nor attorneys for the family would disclose the amount of the monetary settlement. But family attorney Shaka Johnson said during a news conference Thursday that it was substantial. Johnson stressed it included an agreement that resulted in the announcement this week that the city would equip all patrol officers with stun guns.
The 17-page suit, filed Wednesday in Common Pleas Court, accuses police officers Sean Matarazzo and Thomas Munz of using unreasonable and unauthorized force when they shot Wallace, who was holding a kitchen knife, approximately 10 times.
The mayor’s office said the city requested that the guard help with “the current situation and election preparation.”
The footage, according to family attorney Shaka Johnson, shows a man greeting officers in a “cloud.”
The City Council, joining leaders of other cities, voted to block police from using tear gas, rubber bullets or pepper spray on peaceful protesters after hearing hours of testimony from people injured or traumatized by them, including a group hit with tear gas as they were corraled near a highway overpass.
Police say they fatally shot Walter Wallace Jr. on Monday after he ignored orders to drop a knife, a death that intensified already heightened tensions in the presidential battleground state.
