A corporate tax break in Pennsylvania worth an estimated $280 million per year operates with little accountability and lacks even the most basic data to determine if it’s actually effective, a recent report found.
After years of offering tech companies millions in tax refunds for building energy-hungry facilities known as data centers, the Keystone State is pivoting to let those companies buy computer equipment tax-free.
The compromise measure lowers the size of the tax break from more than $1 billion to $670 million over 25 years.
Overrides are rare, and can only happen when two-thirds of the legislature are willing to support a bill against the governor’s explicit wishes. The last one happened a decade ago.
