The pilots of a Mesa Airlines plane abandoned a landing attempt at the Burbank, Calif., airport
The pilot, Ara Zobayan, was prohibited by federal regulations from penetrating the clouds, but he did so anyway. He told air traffic controllers that he was about to rise above the clouds, but instead he crashed into the hillside below. Zobayan was also killed in the crash on Jan. 26, 2020.
The NTSB determined the final probable cause of the crash to be the failure of the conduit’s support system due to longtime corrosion, which resulted in its displacement, the agency said in a release Thursday.
The National Transportation Safety Board says all aspects of the crash remain under investigation.
