Central Pennsylvania’s food banks are seeing increasing demand following eligibility changes to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, that are kicking people off the program and causing confusion. Pennsylvanians enrolled in SNAP decreased by 11% in the past year, from 1.96 million in May 2025 to 1.75 million as of June 2026, according to the state Department of Human Services.

With schools out for summer break and student access to free breakfasts and accessible lunches decreasing, food insecurity is expected to rise throughout Central Pennsylvania.

Food advocates say that the new budget increases will help fortify the supply of foods.

The Trump Administration has been buying food from farmers and getting it to food banks. Food banks, however, say the program was not set up to deliver food efficiently.
