An excited crowd of 100 people filled a small Hummelstown park in May, to plant the ceremonial 10 millionth tree, as part of the Keystone 10 Million Trees initiative spearheaded by the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, in partnership with more than 300 organizations across Pennsylvania, accomplished over eight years.
By Karen Hendricks/WITF The Chesapeake Bay’s blue crab population is seeing some positive signs after hitting near-record lows last year, according to a Chesapeake Bay Foundation survey done in Virginia and Maryland. Central Pennsylvania is part of the watershed, and the Susquehanna River is the largest source of freshwater to feed into the bay.
Two environmental justice advocates from central Pennsylvania, Zeshan Ismat and Brennan Ka’aihue, will lead tree planting projects in underserved sections of their communities.
The program will allow the Chesapeake Bay Foundation to organize special farm field events that could serve as an opportunity to meet urban farmers in Lancaster, York, and Harrisburg.
Pennsylvania continues to trail other states in meeting its goals for the Chesapeake Bay restoration.
