Smart Talk: F & M president on low-income students, community

What to look for on Smart Talk Monday, August 24, 2015:

A college education can be expensive.  Loans and grants help students and their families pay tuition and other fees, but for some, the sticker price of some institutions discourages them into looking elsewhere -- namely a public university or community college.

High costs are especially difficult for students from low-income families.  For those students, it's not just money that keeps them from even applying to some of the best schools.  Often they're told they can't succeed because of where they attended high school or grew up.

Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster has a reputation as one of the nation's best liberal arts private institutions.  It's a place that many low-income students rule out because they don't think they can be a success.

F & M President Daniel Porterfield disagrees and cites the college's Next Generation Initiative as the reason why.

Porterfield appears on Monday's Smart Talk to discuss the program and F & M's relationship with the community.

Thank you for taking my call earlier. I have to say this show sounds like one big infomercial for F & M. Higher education is in a crisis in terms of costs and affordability for the vast majority of America's youth. Every pointed question is met by this president with an anecdote about how well his college is doing. It's not news; it's publicity. Please avoid this in the future.

    A listener writes...
One of the best programs at F and M is the " Common Hour" program... this is free and open to the Lancaster community... go the the F and M web site look for EVENTS - COMMON HOUR - for more information on dates/time/location and topics - NBS

Dan Porterfield is a smart guy and well spoken, but there are some elements of what he said today that are a little like a slick political speech. The main one that I would comment on is the issue of the state of Pennsylvania "investing" in higher education. When I think of "investing" I think of taking money that I have available to me and putting it into some instrument that will give me interest or growth. When politicians talk about making an "investment," they are talking about taking money from taxpayers and spending it. Mr. Porterfield likes Governor Wolf, the Godilla monster of taxation, who has proposed expanding taxation even in hateful ways like taxing nursing home care. In any case, lets not continue to fall for the ruse of taking people's money and calling it "investment."

One of my chief complaints about this show over years of listening is the lack of counterpoint; this is not helped by the soft questioning technique Scott employs. This program on F&M was about the worst example I've heard to date. It was mostly a thirty infomercial for F&M.

Scott could have been more pointed in so many areas, such as professor and administrative salaries or the ROI on such an expensive tuition. Instead we got what made me think someone high up at WITF or Pinnacle is an F&M alum. I expect more from WITF.

Yep, F and M was on last year for something similar on their great value... Are they funding WITF???
