Ask a Legal State: A National Conversation About Pot from WNYC and Colorado Public Radio

Today dozens of states across the country are talking about pot, and whether to and how to legalize it. More than 20 states have legalized medical marijuana, and at least 10 states are considering legalizing recreational weed. Ask a Legal State is a national call-in show for anyone thinking about the path to legal cannabis and the ramifications to connect with experts in the states that have already legalized it.

WITF joins WNYC for a national conversation about cannabis and the rapidly changing legal, political, and cultural landscapes around it. WNYC's Brian Lehrer will host, along with Colorado Public Radio's Ann Marie Awad. The show will feature expert guests and contributing reporters from participating stations, and will cover everything from policing and social justice issues to buying, selling, and using legal pot in America.

1pm: LEGALLY STONED IN AMERICA

  • What is the culture around pot turning out to be like in the states where it's legal? What are the questions from the states where it's not?
  • What has the public health impact been?
  • How do we regulate for public health and safety from dependency issues to driving while stoned?
  • What's the lived experience of legal weed for new and experienced users? --
  • Who is using it and how and where and when?

2pm: SOCIAL JUSTICE, REPARATIONS + ADVICE

  • Why is decriminalization a social justice issue? How is it being addressed in different ways in the states where it's legal? What are the questions from the states where it's not?
  • What are some of the different approaches to dealing with disparate impacts of criminalization in our states?
  • What kinds of reparations are being made for past criminalization?

This special will broadcast on April 20 1:00pm-3:00pm.  This special will preempt Radiolab and This American Life.
