The Great American Read

Designed to spark a national conversation about reading, literacy, and the books that have inspired, moved, and shaped us, THE GREAT AMERICAN READ is a multi-part PBS series airing locally this fall on WITF TV and a multi-platform initiative hosted by Meredith Vieira. Explore and celebrate the power of reading, told through the prism of America's 100 best-loved novels (as chosen in a national survey).

Notable figures from the entertainment, sports, news, and literary worlds, as well as everyday Americans, lend their voices and passion to the series, which culminates in the first-ever national vote to choose "America's Best-Loved Novel." Voting is open! Explore the list and vote for your favorites.

The series is designed to take a deeper dive with questions about why these books matter, why we are drawn to these themes, and what they tell us about ourselves. The series also explores how authors approach their craft as they create the characters and storylines reflected in these themes.

America's bookshelf includes authors from over 10 countries, 26 books that have been banned or challenged, 19 stories with strong heroines and 8 Pulitzer Prize winners!

THE GREAT AMERICAN READ television series features entertaining and informative documentary segments, with compelling testimonials from celebrities, authors, notable Americans and book lovers across the country. The two-hour launch episode in which the list of 100 books was revealed in March. Beginning September 11 watch WITF TV to see five new one-hour theme episodes examining concepts common to groups of books on the list.

Then don't miss the exciting finale airing October 23 which includes a countdown of America's top 20 favorites and builds to the announcement of the country's choice for best-loved novel.
