A Prairie Home Companion is returning to WITF in July.  The show features a blend of musical performances, comedy, and collaborations that can't be heard anywhere else.  WITF took a break from the program after Garrison Keillor, the founder and long running host, retired last year.  The program returns with a new sound from a new host, mandolinist Chris Thile.

Chris made his first A Prairie Home Companion appearance in 1996. That broadcast showcased remarkable young artists. Chris, then 15, clearly fit the bill. Since that early APHC booking, Chris, recipient of a 2012 MacArthur "genius" grant, has certainly made his mark - and not only in bluegrass music. His mandolin concerto, Ad astra per alas porci, had its official premiere in 2009 with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra. He has collaborated with a who's who of musicians. His album Bass & Mandolin (Nonesuch) with Edgar Meyer won a Grammy, as did The Goat Rodeo Sessions (Sony Masterworks), when he joined forces with Meyer, Stuart Duncan, and Yo-Yo Ma. And his Bach: Sonatas and Partitas, Vol. 1 - music originally composed for violin - was released by Nonesuch Records in 2013.

You'll notice some elements that are the same with familar voices (and sounds) from Fred Newman, Tim Russell, Sue Scott, Rich Dworsky.  You'll also hear new elements to the program A Prairie Home Companion draws new, diverse talent to public radio, with guests such as Jack White, Ed Helms, Aimee Mann, Johnathan Colton, Esperanza Spalding, John Hodgman, Tig Notaro, Dawes, Angelique Kidjo, Ben Folds, and Steve Martin and The Steep Canyon Rangers.

Listen to A Prairie Home Companion beginning July 1 on WITF.  Tune in Saturdays at 6:00pm and Sundays at noon.  This is part of a larger schedule update beginning July 1 on WITF 89.5 & 93.3.
