Rob Evans Cicada

Rob Evans is known for artwork which has a dreamlike, mysterious quality. Those familiar with his work can easily understand why an exhibit of his pieces would be titled "Mystery and Metaphor". WITF's Joe Ulrich interviewed the artist some months ago in his studio in York County, and explored the unique qualities of his artwork.

The exhibit on display now at the Reading Public Museum is one that the artist describes as the most comprehensive exhibit of his work ever mounted in Central PA. It includes a number of pieces on loan from numerous museums. The show features more than 40 works spanning four decades, ranging in size from two-inch square meticulously crafted miniatures to monumental triptychs and altarpieces 12 feet in length. The exhibition is grouped by theme and subject matter and includes some of the artist's most well-known major works such as Evening Ritual (1989), Cicada (2001), Moth (1993) and Origins (2007), as well as more recent paintings.

Works by Rob Evans have been acquired by well-known museums from around the world, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, National Gallery of Art, Corcoran Museum of Art, San Francisco Art Museums Tretyakov Museum in Moscow and many others. Evans has also served on the board of Yorkarts and helped found York's newest art center, Marketview Arts. He is also the founder and director of the Pennsylvania Arts Experience, a non-profit artist trail running from York to New Hope, PA, promoting artist studios, museums and galleries in the river valleys of Southeastern Pennsylvania.

The full title of the Reading Public Museum exhibit is Rob Evans: Mystery and Metaphor -- Four Decades of Work. It will be on display through December 7, 2014. There will be an artist gallery talk at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, October 24. The museum is located at 500 Museum Road, Reading, PA, and is open daily 11-5. Full details are available at the museum website.
