Holly Near Performs in Susquehanna Folk Music Society Concert

Written by Cary Burkett, Arts & Culture Desk and WITF Host | Oct 30, 2014 10:45 AM

The 40-year career of Holly Near has included roles in television and film and a stint in the cast of the Broadway musical, Hair.

She is known best as a singer/songwriter whose music goes hand-in-hand with her beliefs in social change and political activism. In 1971 she was part of the Free the Army Tour, an anti-Vietnam War road show organized by Jane Fonda and Donald Sutherland.  She has worked alongside such artists as Pete Seeger, Arlo Guthrie, Bonnie Raitt, Joan Baez, Harry Belafonte and many others.

She is an outspoken feminist, an activist for the LGBTQ community and an environmentalist,  qualities which also find expression through her music.

Holly Near will perform in a concert presented by the Susquehanna Folk Music Society on Saturday, November 8 at 7:30 p.m. at Market Square Church in Harrisburg.

She will also present a 90-minute workshop on the same day at 4 p.m., centered on her stories of working for peace and social justice. Attendees are encouraged to bring a covered dish to a potluck supper at 6 p.m. before the concert.
