Gamut Theatre Group is bringing William Shakespeare’s The Tempest to Harrisburg this fall, with performances running October 3 through 18. On The Spark, we’ll talk with Gamut Theatre founder and Executive Director Melissa Nicholson, who returns to the stage as Prospera, about this new production directed by Diego Sandino. Sandino, a first-generation Nicaraguan-American, sets the story on Ometepe, an island in Nicaragua, bringing Spanish dialogue, traditional Latin music and dance, and costumes inspired by Nicaraguan culture into the production.
We’ll discuss how this version of Shakespeare’s classic explores betrayal, power, belonging, forgiveness and the meaning of home while incorporating elements of Nicaraguan culture. The production features original music by local Cuban-American musician Noah Smull and choreography by local Puerto Rican dancer and instructor Jasmin Pantoja. We’ll also talk about Nicholson’s return to the stage and what audiences can expect from Gamut’s take on one of Shakespeare’s most fantastical plays.
