  • Asia Tabb

aired; September 10, 2026

What happens when thousands of travelers suddenly find themselves stranded in a small town far from home? On The Spark, we’ll talk with Lorien Reese-Mahay, Executive Director of Theatre Harrisburg, and David Olmsted, director of Come From Away, about the true story behind the acclaimed musical.

Set in Gander, Newfoundland, Come From Away tells the story of 38 planes diverted to the community following the September 11, 2001 attacks, leaving thousands of passengers in need of food, shelter and support. We’ll discuss how the people of Gander welcomed the unexpected visitors, the real-life stories that inspired the musical, and why the production continues to offer an uplifting reminder of compassion, generosity and the ways people can come together during difficult times.
